About Mr Shaun Appleton
Consultant General Surgeon, Buckinghamshire
I am a Consultant General Surgeon with a special interest in gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery. I was appointed as a consultant in 2002 and have since developed a broad NHS and private practice serving patients across Buckinghamshire and beyond. My NHS work is based at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, where I provide elective surgery at Wycombe Hospital and emergency care at Stoke Mandeville, with clinics also at Amersham.
My private practice is centred at The Chiltern Hospital in Great Missenden and The Shelburne Hospital in High Wycombe. These hospitals offer modern facilities for day-case and short-stay surgery, supported by experienced anaesthetists, nurses and allied professionals.
I graduated from University College and Middlesex Hospital School of Medicine in London in 1989. Postgraduate surgical training took me through leading centres including Chelsea and Westminster, the Royal Marsden and Hammersmith Hospitals, where I developed skills in minimally invasive techniques.
Over the years I have remained closely involved in surgical education and standards. I examine for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and served on the national Specialist Advisory Committee for General Surgery. I have also held leadership roles in training in the Thames Valley region, including Training Programme Director and National Selection Lead for surgical trainees.
What I treat
I offer the full range of common general surgical procedures, with a focus on keyhole approaches wherever appropriate. This includes anti-reflux surgery for GORD and hiatus hernia, gallbladder surgery for gallstones, and comprehensive hernia repair for groin, femoral, umbilical, ventral and incisional hernias. I also provide targeted surgery for sportsman’s groin. My aim is to deliver effective, evidence-based care with clear explanations, realistic expectations and smooth recovery plans
Care philosophy
Good surgery starts with good listening. I take time to understand symptoms, review any previous tests and discuss treatment choices in plain language. Where surgery is the best option, I explain the benefits and risks, what to expect on the day and how we will support recovery. Most procedures are planned as day-case or short-stay, using minimally invasive techniques to help patients get back to normal life quickly.
